Top tips for cycling in London

Top tips for cycling in London

  • never ever ride in the door zone: that's the area within a metre of parked cars. Doors tend to fly open. Very nasty.

  • never ever ride up on the inside of moving vehicles near a junction. They'll turn left across you

  • if you're overtaking vehicles watch out for U turners

  • ensure your bike works...good brakes etc etc

  • don't jump red lights

  • be nice

  • obey traffic rules

  • read John Franklin's Cycle Craft and the Highway Code

  • don't wear headphones/earpieces. You need all your senses all the time

  • always behave predictably

  • hand-signal when turning

  • don't ride in the gutter...because...

  • assertive cycling is the key. You are traffic. Behave like it and don't hesitate to ride in the middle of the lane when necessary

  • always have lights at night

  • helmet? I don't. It's a matter of personnel choice

  • make eye contact with drivers of other vehicles at junctions/side roads etc

  • in potentially dodgy areas - like lonely canal towpaths at night, you'll feel safer on a bike. Debateable. Be careful out there

  • be constantly aware of what's around you

  • if it doesn't feel right and natural, something's wrong. Get advice

  • above all, love it and spread the word.
