Southwark Cyclists
Minutes Weds 8th September 2004
Present: Hugh Bolton,
Apologies, Peter Corkhill
1) Planning issues
a) Planning strategy for SC
AH reported on the decisions made at the recent planning ‘n pizza meeting. It was agreed that SC should focus on increasing the numbers of people cycling and the quality of the environment through three planning related campaigns:
· Adequate bike parking across the borough
· Seeking Community Council support and funding to identify a tenant association in their area and work with them to promote cycling and cycling intensively. This could be monitored to show the impact of cycle ‘saturation’
· To ensure that the Burgess Park track is open 7 days a week
<Action: BM to circulate the letter to Richard Thomas about these ideas as the crib sheet for supporting these ideas in Community Councils. All are encouraged to attend their next Community Council>
<Action: EP to initiate a bike parking provision audit in the borough to take place on a Saturday morning – most likely ending with a drink somewhere – Borough market’s hot apple juice/cider stall likely to be first stop>
Sustrans have also asked for help with cycle to school initiatives. Andrew Rogers is taking the lead on setting this up
b) Current planning issues
As part of the development of the City Academy in Bermondsey, AH is seeking to ensure that cycling is included as an important part of their school travel plan
AH has recently made comments on the Sainsburys store expansion at Dog Kennel Hill about cycle access
Discussion was held about the value of building up a library of planning responses as a source of guidance in future
<Action: EP to liase with Kit R regarding the establishment of a consultation responses section>
<Action: AH to send Kit the Sainsburys consultation and any other recent ones worth sharing. >
c) CRISP process
A few valiant cyclists continue to represent SC on the CRISP reviews of the key LCN+ routes. Route 22 & 182 have recently been reviewed and good suggestions for improvement have been discussed at nearly all of the junctions.
EP asked whether there was an established mechanism to provide input into the routes that go through other boroughs.
BM replied that there isn’t and so suggests that anyone wishing to ensure that their concern is reviewed as part of the CRISP process should contact the coordinator directly
<Action: Aux armes citoyens – the contact details of other coordinators are in the back of the LCC magazine. London’s pot holes are your oyster.>
2) AGM
The next meeting will take place on 14th October – a Thursday – so not to coincide with the LCC AFM. One of the issues to vote on will be whether to move the monthly meeting to a Thursday to avoid a clash with the LCC campaign meetings.
<Action: BM to place issue on forthcoming agenda
Action: BM to find replacement secretary to note the AGM as EP absent>
3) Cycle awards
It was agreed to nominate Burgess Park for the Best Community Cycling Project and Best Cycling initiative for young people. No agreement could be reached on whether a nomination should be submitted for London cycling personality of the year.
3) Newsletter
It was announced as coming. It has subsequently appeared
4) Rides
Loads of good stuff on the web site
5) Finances
The Burgess Park invoice for £6000 has been settled at £100 paid to the kids who were involved as a thank you for their efforts. The SC half of £750 profit from Dunwich Dynamo has swelled the coffers as has the recording of the money from Lambeth Cyclists as part of their contribution to the GLA hustings and the compensation money from TfL for the Cycle Bus mess up. Proof awaits the pudding in terms of receiving these payments.
BM asked the group what should be done with the current surplus. During the discussion that followed, it was agreed that it would be best to husband the money for a short while and use it to support an ambitious bike week
6) AOB
BM announced that Lambeth and Southwark cyclists would be meeting with Val Shawcross to outline our key priorities for the area. This meeting is in response to a request from Val to meet with us. It is hoped that this will be the first of a series – perhaps 4 times a year
<Action: EP to attend also>
