Minutes of the Southwark Cyclists December meeting. 08-12-04 – 19:00 – Blackfriars Settlement Attendees; Barry Mason, Adam Maddison, Anthony Field, Liz Field, Laura MacMillen, Alistair Hanton, Jacqueline Saunders, Che Sutherland, Rebecca Lack, Ash Chowdhry, Sue Richardson, Andy Braben, Kit Reynolds, Hugh Bolton, Gareth Scarlett, Andrew Rodgers. Apologies; Roger Stocker, Eleanor Purser, Peter Corkhill, Ten. Minutes of the November meeting approved. 1) Turner Prize update Barry and Andrew gave an update on the progress of our presence at the Turner Prize. We have been staffing the Jeremy Deller exhibition at the Tate Britain and on Monday 06-12 he was announced as the winner of the 2004 Turner Prize. We are delighted at this as he is a cyclist and dedicated the award in part to “everyone who cycles in London”. We have had a very positive response whilst at the Tate, with very little anti-cycling sentiment expressed. We gave out 1000s of maps, 100s of rough guides and spoke to a lot of people who are interested in starting cycling or increasing the level they already cycle. Hopefully our encouragement has had a benign effect; we certainly believe that it has. Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and effort. The £120+ that has been spent on our time there is considered money well spent. 2) Cycle Saturation in Rotherhithe Southwark Cyclists have received £20,000 in funding from Rotherhithe Community Council to put into one school in order to provide cycling facilities, training and monitoring of the effect of the exercise. Having considered the options it was generally agreed to focus the project on a primary school and invite those primary schools in Rotherhithe to submit a bid to be the subject of the project. It would be better with a primary school because there is a better chance to foster a cycling culture and involve the parents as well. Jacqueline enquired if this sort of exercise should be funded by Southwark Council. In response it is understood that the Council lacks the money and would not be able to support it in the next financial year along without compromising their current cycling related activities. In order to manage this project effectively a Steering Committee has been approved and created with the following people; Ashu Chowdhry (Chair), Barry Mason, Jacqueline Saunders, Adam Maddison and an invite to Ann Warren. They will now take on the following action points. a) Write to the schools and ask them to submit a bid to SC. b) Jacqueline will obtain a model school travel plan. c) Andrew Rodgers will see if there are any similar studies on record at the Department for Transport. d) Ashu will convene a meeting of the Committee members to determine how this will go forward and who will be involved (Sustainable Energy Action, Cycle Training UK, etc). 3) Planning Report Ashu presented the minutes of the planning meeting (available from our website) and Barry reported on the meeting with Councillor Thomas and the Head of Planning in Southwark. We have successfully been able to outline a good relationship with regards to planning matters with the council and obtain some useful contacts. We hope to be able to engage in some positive consultation with them, particularly on upcoming large schemes. 4) Cycle Training UK Rebecca proposed that members of SC undertake cycle training from CTUK and then attend community councils to advise people that this training exists and report on the experience. This programme is supported by CTUK. This was agreed by the meeting and Rebecca will take this forward. 5) Herne Hill Scheme Alistair reported that there are plans to overhaul the junction between Herne Hill Station and Herne Hill Park. He showed plans and indicated what changes were intended and what cycling input was being put in. The meeting agreed that Alistair would speak for SC on this matter. 6) Bike Week 2005 Bike Week 2005 is planned for 11-19 June and has the theme of Everyday Cycling for Health and Fitness. We should start planning our events now in order to get them properly finalised well in advance. So far we have one definite event, bike breakfast at The Globe Theatre, and one tentative event, a cycling film season at the NFT/Imperial War Museum. We need to organise a lot of rides, not just for Bike Week but also in the run up. So far Barry and Andrew have agreed to lead rides, more volunteers are needed. Andrew proposed that a total of 5 bike breakfasts are arranged in key locations in Southwark and will look at options for this. Barry proposed that we need one big focused event, maybe in Southwark Park or Burgess Park. Also we should consider events involving Time Bank, Dr. Bike and so on. Ideas are to be proposed and discussed on the e-group with some further discussion in the January meeting. There are potentially some grants available from Camberwell that may be able to help with funding. 7) LCC Constitution Barry reported back from the Borough Coordinators Meeting that the LCC would like to formalise the relationship between itself and the borough groups. This has a number of ramifications for SC and how we operate with potential new accountabilities and conditions placed on our activities. Barry distributed a few copies of the outline proposal and items for consideration and has agreed to obtain and distribute an electronic copy. Also he asked that we give this some very careful consideration as we will need to discuss this in detail at the next meeting. 8) Newsletter Sue has asked for submissions for the newsletter as soon as possible. Sue also proposed that an SC digital camera be purchased to help us with our PR activities. This was agreed by the meeting and Sue will take this forward with advice from Andrew. 9) Rides Roger Stocker is leading a ride, there is the Greenwich Celidh on 11-12, the Christmas Party on 16-12 and the Deserted London Ride on 25-12. More details available from the website. 10) AOB Andrew proposed that SC invest in maintenance courses for members of SC in return for staffing of DR. Bike sessions. Andrew will investigate options for this and report back to the next meeting. No further progress has been made on Walworth road regeneration.
