Local Cycle Training Gareth Tuffery, the new Road Road Safety Officer, from Southwark Council introduced his role. The post had previously been vacant in Southwark Council, there are now two officers. Southwark Council is now offering subsidised cycle training to both schools and adults. The qualify adults must live or work in the Borough. Training applications should be made direct to gareth.tuffery@southwark.gov.uk The contract for cycle training was also put out for tender by the council. Gareth reported this to the meeting, and advised that the current supplier CTUK, where unsuccessful as their bid didn’t comply with the contract proposed by the council. In particular the requirement by the council that the training provider ensure all children wear helmets and high visibility (day-glo) clothing. Gareth used the term ‘CONSPICUITY ’ in the meeting to describe this requirement which required explanation. Barry raised the point that Southwark Cyclists where not consulted on this, although there was no legal reason why they should be. He also commented that Southwark Cyclists where very happy with CTUK’s work for the group both as part of the Cycle Saturation project with schools and ad-hoc events. Southwark Bike Security project: Minutes from the Bike Security meeting on 31 July will be posted on the website shortly. Barry summarised the issues, the main point was concern that although many cyclists have registered their bikes on the new www.immobilise.com website, police on the beat are not using it to check lost or stolen bikes. This is being taken up directly with the Home Office by Susan Crisp, Southwark Council. Discussion around the issue with ebay and gumtree where stolen bikes are often sold, Kit to investigate a contact at eBay. Action Kit 7. Planning / Campaigns Group – no update 8. Finances A report from Richard Reynolds from the t-shirt supplier Good at Magic (GAM) was presented by Barry, Hugh and Kit. Two further batches have been ordered by Tate Modern. The report showed that Southwark Cyclists had made money on the first batch, however the production and retail of the t-shirts had involved more work than Richard had expected, Hugh queried the figures and suggested they where too generous to Southwark Cyclists. Hugh to review figures, and Barry to discuss further with Richard. Kit Reynolds, (Richard’s brother) advised that Richard had taken an order for a further 100 T-shirts for Southwark Cyclists from Barry. Barry confirmed that this was not the case, and that he will clarify with Richard. Southwark Cyclists are not to carry stock, ideally GAM should sell via their website. Action: Hugh and Barry 9.
