Meet 9am Southwark Needle and 10am Cutty Sark Gardens. That always different slow explore downriver, over the Woolwich ferry and round docklands. Stay all day or drop out halfway as Island Gardens or whenever. 30 miles if you stay all day. Mostly motor-free tarmac. Barry 07905 889 005.

Saturday 21st January: Dulwich Greendale/Peckham cricket bats.
Meet 9am Cutty Sark Gardens and 10am Southwark Needle. To London Cycling Campaign's Best Cycling Facility of 2005. Then to Peckham Rye and the old bat factory and other hidden marvels that the tram may demolish. A chance to make up your own mind with the Peckham Society. A slow 10 miles or so. Sunday 22th January: The Putney/Woolwich ferry.
We first did this in Bike Week 2005. Great chance to explore London's riverside, slowly hugging every cyclable inch (well almost) in an west-east-west 8 shape. Meet 9am Cutty Sark Gardens. 10am Southwark Needle. North over Westminster Bridge. West to Putney and over. East to Tower Bridge and over. East to Woolwich Ferry and over. West back to start. That's 45 miles if you stay all day so the pace will be steady. Barry 07905 889 005.

Sunday 5 February: East along the Thames.
Meet 9am Southwark Needle and 10am Cutty Sark Gardens. We'll go as far as we get down the Thames path and turn round to get home around 5pm. An easy 30 miles or so. Barry 07905 889 005.

Thursday 23rd February: Afterworker: Radical history of biking at 56a. Meet 6.30pm Southwark Needle for a very slow ride to 56A Info Shop, (56 Crampton Street, SE17 3AE) for a South London Radical History Group evening. A whole day of bicycle magic for everyone, and it's all FREE including :

  • Rich Johnson is one of the UK's best extreme stunt riders - his hour-long shows are on at midday, 2pm and 4pm.
  • Decathlon's professional mechanics are Dr Bike for the day. Get your bike's minor aches, pains and punctures sorted while you wait.
  • Cycle Training : UK's professionals will give advice on all sorts of cycling. Can't ride a bike? Ask them.
  • 3 different 45 minutes Local Exploring Bike Rides for everyone leaving at 11am, 1pm and 3pm to be led by Southwark Cyclists.
  • There'll be lots of advice from the Metropolitan Police, Southwark Council and others about how to keep your bike safe from theft, by locking it up well and registering it too.
  • Safe Routes to School? Local cycling routes? Longer rides? Tour de France 2007 down Jamaica Road?! ..... Just ask. The days are getting longer and there's never been a better time - or more reasons - to enjoy outdoor cycling !

Sunday 12 March: Mast Pond Wharf. Meet 9am Southwark Needle, then 10am Cutty Sark Gardens for the river ride to coffee at Woolwich Arsenal. We'll stop at Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park en route. Then 12 noon meet on the Woolwich Ferry carpark for group photo by the News Shopper. Lunch in Woolwich and free ferry ride after for the north route back to Island Gardens and the Greenwich Foot Tunnel. (Via the excellent and quirky new Farraday display at Trinity Buoy Wharf). Sunday 2nd April: Cathedral of Sewage Ride
The Crossness Pumping Station is open this coming Sunday. Glorious vast Victorian technicolour pumping machines. So good they're in Greenwich Council's tourist guide. But they're in Bexley. Meet 10am Cutty Sark Gardens. Ray 0796 334 9993.

Saturday 8th April: Waltham Abbey
Meet Cutty Sark Gardens Time 10am. Through the greenwich Foot tunnel, up the Isle of Dogs, Limehouse Cut and then up the Lea River to Waltham Abbey. 45 easy going towpath miles return. Don't forget that you are supposed to have a Towpath permit. These are instantly available on line. Ray 0796 334 9993.

Sunday 9th April: Hoo Peninsula
Meet 9am Cutty Sark Gardens for a quickish 25 miles on some big roads to Gravesend and coffee. Then relax into a 20 slower miles rural explore starting with the Shorne Marshes. Lunch. Then quickish ride back to London again. About 75 miles in all. Train option: get the train there or back or neither. Train to Gravesend rom Charing Cross (9.56am), London Bridge (10.04am), New Cross (10.10am) arrives Gravesend 10.49am. (Careful: no Greenwich to Gravesend trains this Sunday. Bus to New Cross). Friday 14th April: Good Friday races at Herne Hill Velodrome.
Herne Hill Velodrome once again hosts the Good Friday International Track Meeting. Watching the track races and lazing about. Infectious excitement and some baffling events too. Some of us will take turn helping on the Friends of Herne Hill Velodrome stand to recruit more. It's a big day of a slightly different bike culture and shouldn't be missed. 12ukp to get in. Doors open 11am. Meet 9am Cutty Sark Gardens, 10am Southwark Needle, outh end of London Bridge for a slowish ride there. Find your own way home. Barry 07905 889 005.

Sunday 16th April: Thames Path Adventure
Reading to London. A slowish explore along as much of the riverside as possible; 70 miles along the Thames Path. Meet 8am Southwark Needle, south end of London Bridge or 8.40am Paddington Station ticket office for the 9.07 train to Reading. Arrives 9.44am. Buy tickets when we meet. 4 go for the price of 2. Thursday 20 April: Bermondsey Street Inspection.
Walk "Shared Space" Bermondsey Street with Southwark Cyclists and Southwark Living Streets. Meet 6.45pm outside the Bermondsey Kitchen, 194 Bermondsey Street. Southwark Council have marked this street for change. So let's plan it. A last chance to turn a local motor-dominated street into a friendly one. Barry 07905 889 005.

Monday 1st May: Deptford's Jack in the Green procession;
bought to you by Rediscovered Urban Rituals. Assemble 12 noon at the Herb Garden, MacMillan Street, Deptford SE8 near St Nicholas church says the blurb. The procession will then wind its way through the street of Deptford old town. The Shipwright's Palace will be open. Unmissable. Ride? Saturday 17th - Sunday 25th June: National Bike week
This year National Bike Week coincides with the London Architecture Biennale, a multi-site celebration of London architecture and Change (the theme) by architects and designers. Southwark Cyclists are helping LAB with their bike rides and the Reinventing the Bike Shed exhibition.

Bike Hire discounts: If you haven't got a bike yet, you're from out of town and don't have your bike with you or know a potential London Cyclist then there's no excuse not to make one of our Bike Week events, we've teamed up with two local Bike shops to offer discounted bike hire

It's Southwark Cyclists annual picnic to round off National Bike Week on the grassy mound at King's Stairs Gardens just 30 bike-lengths downstream from The Angel.

Saturday 8 July @2100 hrs - Sunday 9 July 2006:
Dunwich Dynamo 14 - The Legend Easy. Just turn up for the start and ride. An unsupported (yes, really) overnight ride to Dunwich Beach in Suffolk. Once out of London, it's mostly deserted country lanes. But it's 120 miles. A long long way. Then swim. Or not.
Coach back tickets, Sunday 1pm (we aim to leave at that time), £14 until 1st June. £21 after that.
Meet 6pm on Saturday 8 July at Cutty Sark Gardens for the 4 mile ride to the 9pm start at the Pub on the Park, London Fields, Martello Street, Hackney.

Lots of stalls, events etc. Southwark Cyclists stand next to Decathlon's Dr Bike and Transport for London's first Tour de France tent (compare with that at Herne Hill last Good Friday).

Set up from 10am. Tables provided. Ends 6pm. Entrance Redriff Road Map SE16

We're leading 3 local easy rides at 11, 1 and 3pm using same route shown on the 60 special T shirts being made. We'll stamp riders passports at each of the 6 venues en route. Prize draw end of day.
£200 grant from Rotherhithe Festival.

Sunday 23rd July: Karen's Kent Knockabout, about 50 miles. Fast ride from Cutty Sark Gardens (leaving at 10am) on-road to Wilmington for elevenses at Karen's, then up and down the lovely, hilly Kent countryside. Visit to The Hop Shop at Castle Farm to purchase farm foods and beautiful jewellery, pub lunch in Eynsford (or picnic in Lullingstone Park dependent on weather). Bellissima! Cycle back to Greenwich. East to the Woolwich Ferry, over, lunch, back via Island Gardens, the Wapping canals, tea at Wapping Pumping Station, Tower Bridge.

Thursday 24 August: Surrey Quays Bike Magic Day. Surrey Quays Shopping Centre car park. 11am-7pm. We're leading easy local 50 minute rides at 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm. Rich Johnson and team will do their excellent stunt shows at 12 noon, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm. Cycle Training UK are Dr Biking all day and there's a training area too. Crime Prevention will be marking bikes and we'll have an information stall there too. Mega sports store Decathlon will also be out there. It's also the launch of our Transport for London funded Shopping Centred Cycling project aimed directly at all those shopping cars. Up to 3 hours CTUK training for only £10. Off the shelf. We'll measure the results carefully and will have leafletted those carparks 3 time before the event and on the day itself. Help needed on day. Project report.

Sunday 3 September: Tour of Britain and Bike Fest. Sixth, and last, stage of the Tour of Britain starting in Greenwich, heading out north to Primrose Hill and Highgate West Hill, then finishing with 20 laps of Whitehall. Includes Bike Fest 06 on The Mall. More information here and here. Meet 10am Southwark Needle for slow ride up to The Mall and Bikefest and the Tour of Britain finish...optional return to Southwark Park and Southwark Councillors for 2pm to see 2.35pm peleton on Lower/Jamaica Road.....then back to Mall to see finishing laps and end at about 4.20pm.

Saturday 23rd - Sunday 24th September: The fabulous Whitstable Weekend. Ride the 60 miles to Whitstable. Sleep over. Oyster. Then 60 to Dover. Train back Sunday evening.

Meet 9am Saturday at Cutty Sark Gardens for the big road ride out of London or train it to Rochester and meet us for lunch about 12.30pm.

Saturday 30th September: The Last Ferry. Meet 8.45am Southwark Needle or 9am Liverpool Street station for the 9.30am to Manningtree. Lovely Stour estuary to Harwich and coffee. Then south to St Osyth and last chance of the year to ferry cross to Mersea Island. Excellent swimming there (but watch the current). Causeway road back to mainland. Train back from Colchester late afternoon. Rail returns to Manningtree 4 go half price so 9.50ukp return on that deal. Ferry fare is 2.50ukp. About 50 miles. Ride Report

Sunday 1st October: Ride of the Falling leaves. "Testing" 110km or 80km route options for this classic autumn loop around Surrey starting and finishing at Herne Hill Velodrome. 12ukp in advance 15ukp on the day entry fee covers certificates, pasta and drink at finish with proceeds going to The Lavender Trust . Friday 20 - Saturday 21st October: Stolen Bike Haul. The police have recently recovered 70 stolen bikes (some may only be frames?). They may have photos of them at a mobile police station which will be parked outside the steps by the main entrance arch to Waterloo Station. By the Eurostar platform 19 end of the station. Monday 30th October - Saturday 18 November: Reinventing the Bike Shed 2. Unmissable. The exhibition looks at urban cycling solutions worldwide and highlights the best ideas from the Reinventing the Bike Shed open international design competition. It's part of the Bike Shed initiative launched during Bike Week 2006 and the London Architecture Biennale by Fielden Clegg Bradley, (part of the Design Against Crime Research Centre at the University of the Arts London), Blueprint Magazine, Southwark Cyclists and Transport for London. The exhibition coincides with London's Moving, a New London Architecture exhibition on the transformation of London's transport (1st November - 13th January). Where: New London Architecture, The Building Centre, 26 Store Street. Monday - Friday 9am-6pm, Saturday 10am-4pm, closed Sundays. The Legible London exhibition there runs(walks?) until 3 March 2007 and is very worth seeing too.

Saturday 2nd December: Locks Docks and One Steaming Ferry... The Food Chain Edition: Friday 1 December is World Aids Day. The Food Chain is a London charity that provides nutrition services, including home delivered meals, groceries and food etc advice to men, women and children who are very ill as a result of HIV related illness. All their services are provided with the help of volunteers. So today's always different Locks Docks is dedicated to The Food Chain. There's a voluntary donation of at least 10ukp (5ukp) at the starts. Every penny to The Food Chain. Meet 9am Southwark Needle, south end of London Bridge..or 10am Cutty Sark Gardens, Greenwich for an all day sociable explore of docklands with buy your own coffee, lunch and tea stops.
